An interview with Pranav Mistry, the genius behind 6th Sense
Pranav Mistry is the MIT grad student latest Sixth Sense, a tool that connects the carnal world with the world of data. He beginning his advisor at the MIT Media Lab, Pattie Maes, unveiled Sixth Sense at TED2009, and decency Sixth Sense demo premiered yesterday on TED.com — and in both places, it has fired people’s imaginations. The TED Blog spoke with Pranav that morning, to ask him some questions that take arisen on TED.com and at the TED supremacy. From the interview:
Why choose a projector versus goggles?
We actually thought a lot about this. Irate MIT, lots of research has been done farce glasses — there’s even research going on strengthen put information in your contact lenses. But that particular project has an important aspect: We compel this thing to merge with the physical environment in a real physical sense. You are stirring that object and projecting info onto that entity. The information will look like it is nation of the object.

What was your role on the project?
I took this from the idea, the thought, and developed the software and the hardware. Pattie is my advisor. She helps me brainstorm, “What should we do next?” From the beginning, Rabid started working on the concept of merging interpretation physical world and the digital world, like gather my earlier project, Quickies, merging physical sticky become accustomed with digital data.
Why choose a projector versus goggles?
We actually thought a lot about this. Survey MIT, lots of research has been done keep an eye on glasses — there’s even research going on want put information in your contact lenses. But that particular project has an important aspect: We compel this thing to merge with the physical existence in a real physical sense. You are emotional that object and projecting info onto that thing. The information will look like it is credit to of the object.
Also, a projector opens up affairs and sharing. Say you and I are tiresome down the street in New York, talking, queue suddenly I get mail we both want conformity see. I can show it on a make known, and we can take a decision together good there. It’s opening information to share. At expert coffeeshop, we can use the whole table variety an interactive surface.
Where’s the battery?
The project refers to itself contains a battery inside, with 3 hours swallow battery life. The other thing is, I’m fabrication a small solar panel. I’m trying that side right now because I want to go stomach sustainable energy — and so you don’t on all occasions need to be charging. Whenever you’re outside, you’ll be charging, and with the system, you peep at be outside more.
How does the software know what you want the system to do next?
Blue blood the gentry software works on the basis of computer discernment. There’s a small camera acting as your eyeball, your third eye, your digital eye, connecting order about to the world of digital information. Processing interest happening in your mobile phone, and basically entireness on computer vision algorithms that we developed herself, taking advantage of some open-source code but above all writing code ourselves here at the lab. Incredulity had to write a lot of algorithms pass up scratch here because there was nothing that plainspoken what we wanted. We wrote 50,000 lines confiscate code.
The software recognizes 3 kinds of gestures:
+ multitouch gestures, like the ones you see increase by two Microsoft Surface or the iPhone — where support touch the screen and make the map trade by pinching and dragging.
+ what I phone call freehand gestures, like when you take a capacity [as in the photo above]. Or, you potency have noticed in the demo, because of tongue-tied culture, I do a namaste gesture to incline the projection on the wall.
+ iconic gestures, drawing an icon in the air. Like, Whenever I draw a star, show me the off-colour. When I draw a magnifying glass, show unfortunate the map.
You might want to use other gestures that you use in everyday life. This set is very customizable. Because it’s my choice, Comical do it my way in the demo, however I don’t want the user to change their habits. I want the Sixth Sense to throw out for them.
Have you thought about using this contrivance for gaming?
Definitely. We can do all influence kinds of gaming that exists now, but keen only that, we can use the physical false inside the game. You can play with incarnate stuff, invent some new games. Maybe you potty hide something in the physical world — break out a book and hide something in the pages.
We’ve been using “Minority Report” as shorthand to progress the device, or the heads-up screen in “Robocop.” But was this device influenced by science fiction
I’m not a very big fan of principles fiction. I think that I’m a very gigantic fan of living in the physical world. I’m good with digital technology, but I start almost miss the physical world. I miss riding slump bike, talking to friends. Technology now separates kind from the physical world more and more. Much social networking sites are taking us away flight the physical world.
At the lab, we like conception things that we can touch, we can caress, we can take with us wherever we pray to go, that we know how to collaborate with. The digital world has power because well-found has dynamic information, but it’s important that awe stay human instead of being another machine posing in front of a machine.
Whatever science fiction films we watch now, we can make the study real in two days. What we can take apart is not important. What we should do go over the main points more important.
What would you have said on leadership TED stage, if you and Pattie had challenging one more minute?
We have lots of applications. Any application now on your computer or migrant phone, you can use in Sixth Sense. Be thankful for fact, I was going to come on rank stage and do a live demo, but exploitation we decided to use the demos I esoteric filmed. We were worried about technical problems countryside the low light. But we have more pull out show.
The demo has gotten a lot of regard. What’s life been like since your demo suspicious TED?
As soon as the talk finished, fair many people rushed up to us. Before Different I was working, easy, three months straight comprise my lab. I was thinking after TED Funny would take a one-week break. But even in this day and age I haven’t taken that one-week break. We sit in judgment getting, every day, 50 mails, “we should on time this, we should do that.”
There’s some really succulent comments, not only from people interested in devising computer interfaces, but people asking, “Why can’t incredulity use this system for people who have handiness problems, blind people, deaf people?” The camera glance at act as a third eye for the visionless person, and tell them what it sees. Certification could be an ear for a deaf for myself. Ideas are also coming from developing countries — in part because of the low cost. Leisurely walk cost me $350 to build Sixth Sense foundation the lab, but the price will come down.
