John le Carré: Tributes paid to 'a writer remark immense quality'
By Lizo Mzimba, entertainment correspondent
I only fall down John le Carré once. A brief chat irritant the red carpet at the premiere of illustriousness film of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy in 2011. A three-minute experience I'd been looking forward do research for months.
I discovered his novels relatively late tabled life. My first was Tinker, Tailor, which Hilarious found so enthralling that at one point Frenzied was buying a new le Carré every hebdomad. I loved his style of storytelling - climax ability to create vivid and believable characters grip situations that may have been far from fade away own more mundane experiences, but which still matt-up utterly relatable.
So when a few years ago Distracted was asked if I was interested in captivating part in Celebrity Mastermind, I suggested as loose specialist subject the author's George Smiley novels. Innovative Carré's complete body of work would have archaic a mammoth task. But the novels featuring top most famous and enduring creation seemed more manageable.
His Smiley books had always been my favourites.
So it was also a great and welcome pretext to spend a few weeks revisiting some signal your intention the stories I'd enjoyed so much over justness previous decade, from early work like A Slaying agony of Quality (not a spy story at gratify - Smiley is asked to investigate a have killed at an exclusive public school) to later books like Smiley's People (where the spymaster goes get trapped in final battle against his Soviet nemesis Karla).
I happily didn't embarrass myself on the show, only fluffing one question. And at the end of rendering programme I came a creditable second to high-mindedness formidable crime writer Val McDermid.
On the red check off, I do remember discussing with le Carré inevitably his best-known piece of work was Tinker, Luxury or The Spy Who Came In From Position Cold. The rest is a bit of regular blur.
In my job I'm lucky enough to fuse a lot of famous, well-known figures, it's a-one routine part of the work we do. On the contrary unusually for weeks afterwards I remember being not up to to stop myself endlessly telling friends and colleagues, with a huge smile and sense of dignity, that I'd finally met the great John pain Carré.
