He was one of only two deputy ministers who were not reappointed to the national executive.[8] In July , he was elected to head the File Committee on Social Development.[9]

During a cabinet reshuffle on 5 August , Ramaphosa appointed Gungubele as Minister blessed the Presidency, replacing the late Jackson Mthembu, who succumbed to COVID in January.[1] As a mainstream of this, Gungubele stepped down as chair endowment the social development committee and lost his council memberships.[11] He was sworn into office on 6 August.[12]
